The government has recognized and accepted the industry's critical demand for PTUAS (Pharmaceutical Technology Upgradation Assistance Scheme) changes to better support improving quality standards, said Arunish Chawla, Secretary of the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP).
Speaking at the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) at the 8th PharmaMed HD at an event on pharmaceuticals, medical devices, hospitals and diagnostics on the theme 'Make in India for the World' held at PHD House in New Delhi, he said, the country must focus. The government is making progress in all three dimensions of the growth of the pharmaceutical industry.
Commenting on the focus on improving quality standards, he said that the Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers has approved guidelines for modifying or reforming the PTUAS system. This system mainly concerned medium and small pharmaceutical manufacturing units. Considering the need, we updated the systems to include everything needed, such as certification costs.
Depending on the size and turnover, there is a simple ordering structure where each unit can receive approximately 10-20 percent compensation for improving quality standards and obtaining audited certificates. This was a critical industry demand, and we are happy to report that it has been heard, acknowledged, accepted, and fulfilled," he said. He added that half of the manufacturing units in India have complied with WHO GMP standards.
PTUAS is a credit-linked scheme that provides financial support of up to one million to pharmaceutical MSMEs that want to upgrade their production facilities to WHO-GMP standards or Plan M standards. It is one of the three Pharmaceutical Industry Strengthening (SPI) sub-programmes aimed at strengthening pharmaceutical MSMEs in the country. The two sub-schemes are the Pharmaceutical Industry Assistance Clusters for Common Spaces (APICF) and the Medicines and Medical Devices Promotion and Development Program.
