The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, has been awarded the Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion 2024 by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The Nelson Mandela Prize for Health Promotion, established by the WHO in 2019, honors individuals, institutions, and governmental or non-governmental organizations that are important in promoting health.
This symbol represents NIMHANSand. "For his dedication and contribution to the promotion of mental health and well-being," the university said in a statement.
Headquartered in Bangalore, NIMHANS has been at the forefront of mental health and neuroscience, championing innovative research, education and patient care approaches. We initiate and implement cutting-edge mental health programs that address the needs of diverse populations. Our abilities to integrate mental health care into general health care, develop community-based strategies and pioneer digital health interventions have been recognized worldwide.
This honor comes at a very important time for NIMHANS. This is because the institute is celebrating its predecessor's 50th and 70th anniversary, the All India Institute of Mental Health (AIIMH). As NIMHANS marks the two awards, this award has a unique meaning, reflecting the university's heritage and mental health and neuroscience advances, the university said.
“We are very proud to receive the Nelson Mandela Health Promotion Award at this point in our institutional journey. Director of NIMHANS, Dr. said Pratima Murthy.
“This award is not only a recognition of our past and present achievements but also a validation of the legacy and enduring vision that has guided NIMHANS since its inception. "This strengthens our resolve to continue our mission to promote mental health and wellness and make a real difference in the lives of those we serve," he added.
