The American Oncology Institute (AOI) at Babina Specialty Hospital in Imphal has recently initiated iodine therapy to treat thyroid cancer. A recent research report on thyroid cases in Northeast India has indicated a noticeable increase in the prevalence of thyroid disorders, particularly in Manipur and its neighboring states.

The Indian Thyroid Society reports that 4.2 crore Indians are currently suffering from thyroid disorders, with almost 90 percent of cases remaining undiagnosed.

Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy. Radiutilizationine targets and destroys cancerous thyroid cells while minimizing harm to healthy tissue. It is known as radioiodine therapradioiodinective iodine therapy. Dr. Sapam Ranjan, Minister of Health and Family Welfare Government of Manipur, stated, "The launch of iodine therapy at AOI represents a significant milestone in our commitment to providing comprehensive cancer care services to the people of Manipur and neighboring regions. With this advanced treatment modality, patients no longer need to travel long distances to seek specialized cancer care, as they can now access state-of-the-art treatment right here in Imphal."

Iodine therapy, now available at AOI Imphal, offers a targeted and effective solution for managing thyroid disorders. This advanced treatment modality utilizes radioactive iodine to selectively destroy thyroid tissue, thereby reducing the size of thyroid nodules and alleviating symptoms associated with hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer. As radioactive iodine therapy requires a special setup, AOI Imphal is fully equipped with separate isolation rooms and drainage systems.

Dr. Dhabali Thangjam, CMD Babina Diagnostics, emphasized the importance of introducing advanced cancer care services to the region, stating, "Iodine therapy fills a critical gap in cancer treatment options available in Northeast India. By offering this innovative therapy at AOI Imphal, we aim to improve accessibility to quality cancer care and ensure that patients receive the treatment they need close to home."
