HOSMAT Hospital, the dedicated orthopaedic care provider has now installed the 3rd generation CUVIS robotic surgery unit, at its facility in Bengaluru. This is the 2nd medical centre in Karnataka to have this latest automated robotic system after Manipal Hospitals. Going by the high acceptance of robots in abdominal and pelvic surgeries, now it is seen to be most preferred in joint replacement for its high accuracy and precision technique. It ensures minimal removal of bone.
The post-operative recovery is very smooth with big relief in pain and comfort to bend the knee compared to traditional knee replacement Knee replacement, referred to arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to resurface a knee damaged by arthritis of the knee bones.
Two of the knee bone surfaces of the knee are replaced by a high density polyethylene, which are the knee cap bone and upper end of leg bone. The thigh bone is lined by a special metal called cobalt chrome which is non-magnetic and MRI safe This knee replacement is prescribed for arthritis or knee damage due to an old injury or by ageing which restricts movement. Various types of arthritis affect the knee joint. It causes the breakdown and wear & tear of the joint surface and loss of cartilage.
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease, affecting middle-aged and older population. Rheumatoid arthritis causes severe damage at a younger age. Traumatic arthritis due to old injury. The 3D CT scan images are fed into the robotic system to provide a real-time detailed anatomy of the knee to constantly assist the surgeon, for the highly accurate replacement operation. It relays precise information of the knee to a robotics-assisted hand held device used by the surgeon during the procedure.
Hence by collecting patient specific knee spatial information before the intervention, the surgeon gets extensive data to assist in trimming the damaged surfaces of the knee, balance the joints and position the implant with precision. Even bow legs and side bent knees are made straight. With the latest American implants –Meril Gold the patient can sit cross legged on the floor after few months and has a long life of the replacement, said Dr Thomas Chandy, chief of orthopaedics and arthoplasty, HOSMAT.
