Honeywell has announced a revolutionary technology, Digital Holographic Microscopy that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to quickly count and sort microscopic particles or cells. The revolutionary technology can revolutionize several industries by allowing quicker analysis and making complicated processes easier.
In the healthcare sector, Digital Holographic Microscopy would significantly shorten treatment time for patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis at home. These patients are prone to developing abdominal lining infections, which take 1-2 days to diagnose because samples must be shipped out to specialized labs. A delay in diagnosis will aggravate the condition of the patient if left untreated.
To solve this problem, Honeywell's technology employs a portable device with a laser, image sensor, and disposable microscope slide to take images of a patient's dialysis fluid at the point of care. AI algorithms then interpret these images to rapidly detect infection by counting the number and type of white blood cells, enabling patients to receive timely and proper treatment.
“We are seeing a growing need for solutions that can provide results that are both rapid and precise, empowering healthcare professionals to make informed decisions quickly,” said Sarah Martin, President of Honeywell Sensing Solutions. “We have invested in innovations like Digital Holographic Microscopy because of their power to make testing and analysis more accessible to patients while also improving patient care and efficiency across our healthcare system.”
Digital Holographic Microscopy can be applied in environmental monitoring. It can quantify the quality and quantity of air pollutants, aiding in keeping indoor air cleaner and safer. It can also monitor cells and other organisms in liquid samples for quality and safety assurance in many industries. Honeywell's newest development promises to boost diagnostic speed, better patient care, and effective monitoring solutions for environmental and industrial applications.
