Summers are fast approaching and so is the season of pollen and allergens. A summer cold is more common and widespread than you think. While outdoor allergens like pollen usually cause respiratory issues in the summer months, you need not panic if you suddenly come down with a congested and running nose.
People are under the misapprehension that they can catch a cold only during the winter season. On the contrary, people can be afflicted by cold and a running nose during the hot season as well. Nasal congestion, especially in the summer, can be attributed to pollution, dust, and allergies. Elevated levels of pollution can trigger rhinitis - an inflamed or congested nose.
Difference between Summer Cold and Winter Cold
The difference between a summer cold and a winter cold is found not only in the seasonal temperature variations but also in the environmental factors that contribute to each. One notable distinction is the soaring levels of pollution during the summer season, which can aggravate respiratory symptoms.
In fact, summer air pollution is one of the prevalent issues in India, characterized by hot, still, and arid conditions that facilitate the accumulation of pollutants, particularly dust and particulate matter. The absence of strong winds allows this mass of pollutants to linger over the same area for days, a phenomenon referred to as stagnation. Climate change exacerbates this issue with increased summer temperatures, leading to more days of stagnation.
A study conducted by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) discovered elevated levels of PM 2.5 (fine particulate matter) across various Indian cities and regions from March to May. During summer, this phenomenon is worsened by the heat, which intensifies its effects.
Additionally, the warmer temperatures can create an environment conducive to the propagation of airborne viruses, making individuals more vulnerable to summer colds. Understanding these distinctions can aid in implementing targeted preventive measures and appropriate remedies for seasonal maladies.
Easy and Effective Remedies to Treat Summer Cold
The duration for which a cold persists depends upon an individual’s immunity. The time span is also influenced by diet, adequate hydration, and the physical activity levels of the person.
Be it summer or winter season, it is next to impossible that a person can completely avoid catching a cold. Although there are simple measures that can reduce your chance of contracting it.
